Extra Curricular Opportunities

Instruction in a wide range of musical instruments is available on a user pay basis. Band, and Strings Ensemble are available for students to join. These groups perform regularly for local community functions. This program is facilitated by outside contractors.

speech and communication

All Year 3 students participate and perform in the Gumnuts Choir. Students in Years 4 to 6 can elect to be in the much acclaimed Middle Melodies or Senior Sounds Choirs. Our choirs perform regularly for school and community events and compete in competitive Eisteddfods. All children are welcome to join.

Students from Years 4 -6 are welcome to join the OLA Homework Club. The club meets once a week in the library, where they are supervised in the completion of homework tasks.

Readers Cup is organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state wide competition for young readers. Teams of five students together read a set of books, and then compete with other school or public library teams to answer quiz questions from the books. We select a limited number of students from senior primary to compete in this competition.

The PRC is an annual state wide initiative for state and non-state school students up to Year 9. It is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to engage in reading for pleasure and learning.

The challenge is held during terms 2 and 3. All students in Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 are automatically entered by library staff. Students in Years 4 - 6 can nominate themselves by informing the library staff that they wish to take up the challenge.

Students in senior classes participate in a comprehensive public speaking and debating program and participate in competitive debating with other schools. OLA takes part in the prestigious Queensland Debating Union Junior Competition. Students will also take part in our annual Ben Prior Memorial debating competition.

A Chess Club operates weekly once a week after school with specialist instruction. Students in Years P-6 are welcome to participate at a minimal cost. Please contact the school office for further information.

TOM is a problem solving challenge for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. TOM aims to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. We select a limited number of students from Years 4 to 6 who work in teams to participate in this problem solving challenge.
